NSEAD has a rich history of advocacy, dating back to its origins as the Society of Art Masters in 1888, founded to raise the standard of art teaching and improve the status of educators. Over the decades, NSEAD has been at the forefront of major developments in the field, including the amalgamation of art education societies to form a unified body in 1988 and the launch of The International Journal of Art & Design Education in 1982.
