Description

Level: beginner

From birth to death, studio to the seaside, the Victorian upper-classes embraced photography’s new accessibility to capture life’s moments.

This course explores the evolution of photographs in Victorian family albums, revealing how they can unveil and sometimes hide important details about the past.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • understand that historical photographs followed conventions based on hidden ideas and practices
  • recognise that photos, like other records, may exhibit partiality and biases
  • analyse photos critically and interpret them carefully
  • appreciate the value of context when studying photography
