Belkis Ayón (1967–1999) stands as one of the most significant figures in 20th-century Cuban art. Renowned for her innovative use of collography, she transformed the medium into a profound tool for storytelling, creating enigmatic artworks inspired by the cultural and spiritual traditions of the Abakuá – a secret, predominantly Black male Cuban religious society, rooted in West African ritual traditions.
Central to her work was the reimagining of the Abakuá mythology through the lens of Sikán, a mythical female figure, whose struggles and emotions Ayón intertwined with her own experiences as a Black Cuban woman. Her art defied societal norms, envisioning new possibilities for spirituality and gender equality while crafting a radical mythology that bridged the past and future.
Sikán Illuminations marks the first major UK exhibition of Ayón’s work, showcasing 50 pieces from the Belkis Ayón Estate in Havana.
