In House: Ain Bailey and Holly Graham marks the third exhibition in Studio Voltaire’s duo series, crafted by and for the studio’s resident artists.
This showcase features Petname (2014), Holly Graham’s evocative three-channel video, and Din/Resonance In Blue (2019), a sculptural piece by Ain Bailey. Both works deeply explore their Jamaican heritage, reflecting on the sonic imprints that shape diasporic family ties. Accompanying these works is a collaborative wallpaper, inspired by a design found in Graham’s grandmother’s home.
Petname draws from the tradition of familial nicknames in Caribbean culture, reflecting the intimate layers of family bonds and the migration stories within them. Through interviews with Graham’s relatives, the piece captures heartfelt narratives, where these nicknames serve as markers of deeper cultural and migratory histories.
Bailey’s Din/Resonance In Blue offers a poignant tribute to bereavement. Featuring a triptych of her mother’s passport photos, paired with the words of Amazing Grace, it speaks to the weight of memory and loss in Caribbean funerary traditions. The incomplete set of images found among her mother’s belongings amplifies the deeply personal nature of this work.
Together, Graham and Bailey invite us to consider how cultural memory and family relationships intertwine, evoking both the shared experiences and tensions that accompany the diasporic journey.
