What does it mean to live in a democracy?

This display compassionately curates artworks that explore this question and it’s many nuances – from the extreme left to the far right.

At the heart of a democratic society lies the pursuit of equality, safeguarding the individual rights of every person, and championing fundamental principles such as freedom of expression. While often depicted as an ideal, the reality of democratic societies presents its own set of challenges.

Marginalised groups have tirelessly fought for recognition and representation, striving to be heard amidst the complex fabric of society. Simultaneously, extreme political factions test the boundaries of free speech and the right to protest.

In this exhibition, you will encounter the works of esteemed artists such as Artur Żmijewski, Jenny Holzer, Zoe Leonard, Glenn Ligon, and Lubaina Himid.

These works also include Zoe Leonard’s powerful piece, “I Want a President” (1992), which advocates for representative, class-conscious politics, and challenges the norms of leadership.

By examining these reflections and narratives, we can deepen our understanding of the strengths, shortcomings, and ongoing dialogues of the systems we live by today.
