Sir Antony Gormley is one of the UK’s most celebrated contemporary sculptors, renowned for using the human body to examine space, perception and the nature of consciousness.

His public artworks are found across the UK, including Angel of the North in Gateshead, Another Time in Margate, Alert at Imperial College London, and Another Place on Crosby Beach, featured in this year’s Liverpool Biennial. Internationally, his sculptures have appeared in locations ranging from New York and Florence to Delos, the Netherlands, and the remote salt plains of Western Australia.

‘WITNESS’ focuses on Gormley’s early lead sculptures, created between the 1970s and 1990s. Using lead to encase found objects, natural materials and casts of his own body, Gormley developed a sculptural language that explores what it means to occupy a body, a place or a moment in time. The works consider presence, absence and vulnerability, often linking personal experience to wider ecological and political concerns.

This exhibition offers a thoughtful, close-up encounter with the foundations of Gormley’s sculptural thinking, a chance to experience rarely seen works including Land Sea and Air I, Natural Selection and Witness II.
