This solo exhibition by Myanmar-born artist Htein Lin spans more than two decades of work, reflecting on survival, creativity and political resistance.

At its core are over 45 paintings made in secret during Htein Lin’s imprisonment as a political prisoner between 1998 and 2004. Created with simple tools and limited materials, they offer a rare insight into how he gave form to powerful experiences under extreme conditions.

Continuing this dialogue, the exhibition also includes drawings, sculptures, video works, and new pieces created in collaboration with residents at HMP Grendon, Buckinghamshire and HMP Grendon artist-in-residence, Simon J. Harris.

Among the highlights are Fiery Hell (2024), a large scale painting depicting the impact of civil war on rural communities in Myanmar, and A Show of Hands, an installation of plaster casts made from the hands of former political prisoners.

This exhibition offers a rare chance to engage with the emotional and material realities of life under repression; and the quiet determination required to keep creating in its midst.

As part of the programme, a talk on Saturday 17 May (6–7pm) features Vicky Bowman, former British Ambassador to Myanmar and Htein Lin’s wife, in conversation with Melanie Pocock, Artistic Director at Ikon. They will discuss Htein Lin’s practice and personal history, and the wider context of his work in both Myanmar and the UK prison systems. (Tickets are £3 and booking is required.)
