Step into Leonora Carrington’s fantastical world as her art arrives in the East of England for the first time, marking 50 years since the English translation of her surreal novel, The Hearing Trumpet. This exhibition takes a fresh look at the British-Mexican artist’s extraordinary life, offering a glimpse into the influences that shaped her magical, rebellious vision.
Featuring over 50 of Carrington’s works, alongside pieces by her artistic circle and cultural artefacts ranging from Mayan relics to East Anglian witchcraft, the exhibition draws visitors into an enchanting realm where mystical figures and symbolic creatures spring to life. Carrington’s early years in Chelmsford left a deep imprint, sparking her lifelong exploration of themes like female sexuality, nature, and alchemy—all woven into her intricate, dreamlike imagery.
Explored through a neurodivergent perspective, the exhibition reveals new layers of meaning, challenging traditional views and uncovering the hidden depths of her work.
Along with Carrington’s spellbinding pieces, the exhibition includes Jessie Makinson’s vivid, otherworldly paintings and works by Carrington’s contemporaries, such as Lee Miller, Leonor Fini, Roland Penrose, and Max Ernst.
Families are also invited to unleash their creativity, crafting surrealist artworks to be displayed alongside Carrington’s.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience the limitless imagination of an artist who invites you to see the world in a whole new way.
