Explore new works by renowned contemporary artist Lubaina Himid, in collaboration with Magda Stawarska. This exhibition, Another Chance Encounter, features paintings, a collaborative installation, and thought-provoking interventions throughout the Kettle’s Yard house.
Selected to represent the UK at the 2026 Venice Biennale, Himid’s work is known for its bold exploration of overlooked histories and stories left out of the mainstream narrative. Himid is celebrated for her pioneering role in the British Black Artists Movement and her powerful figurative paintings. Over the past decade, her work has gained international recognition for its engaging social themes and innovative use of colour and form.
This new series reflects on gaps in storytelling, questioning what gets remembered, who is left out, and how we try to fill those spaces. The exhibition also includes a large-scale painting and smaller, site-specific pieces that invite visitors to reflect on history, memory, and representation.
This collaborative installation builds on the artists’ previous work, Blue Grid Test (2020), which drew inspiration from the correspondence between writer Sophie Brzeska and artist Nina Hamnett.
Accessibility:
Kettle’s Yard is fully accessible, with wheelchair access to all areas and assistance dogs welcome. Large-print texts are available on request.
