Explore architecture’s impact on human life in the exhibition “Making Space” at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.

Within the world of photography, buildings have been a perennial subject, offering visually captivating and immovable scenes for early photographic experiments.

Spanning the extensive history of photography, the exhibition presents a diverse range of styles, formats and processes, showcasing captivating works from the 1840s to the present day.

Inspired by the first known photographic image, one of rooftop taken c.1826 by French inventor Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, this exhibition celebrates the timeless connection between individuals and the spaces they inhabit.

This thought-provoking showcase dives into the intricate relationship between architecture and society, shedding light on how the built environment can either perpetuate inequality or address pressing social issues such as homelessness, poverty, and displacement. Even more, it highlights the pivotal role architecture plays in shaping a more sustainable future, making it a powerful force for positive change.
