“My daughter was a baby and I had nowhere to store her milk, nowhere to warm her food, no steriliser. Life became very hard for me and particularly for the children. No child should have to go through this, would we end up living in a single hotel room forever?”
– From Chantelle’s Story
Marc Davenant is a documentary photographer and a two-time winner of the Portrait of Britain competition. He works with marginalised communities and uses photography to highlight social inequality.
Defining homelessness as more than just sleeping rough, in Outsiders, Davenant explores the many faces of housing insecurity – sofa surfing, unsafe accommodation, and life on the streets – through raw, monochrome portraits and deeply personal testimonies.
Using a mix of digital and vintage film cameras, Outsiders captures the unseen realities of people across the UK, from London to Manchester and Glasgow. These striking images, featured in Black & White Photography Magazine, remind us how fragile stability can be and challenge us to see the human stories behind the statistics.
As the magazine puts it:
“Looking at Marc Davenant’s portraits of homeless people living in the UK isn’t easy, but that’s the point.”
