It Is & I Am is a solo exhibition of new work by visual artist Emma Brennan, featuring a site-responsive installation that spans various disciplines. Through a Queer feminist lens, Brennan examines the origins of myth-making on the Island of Ireland.

The exhibition’s title serves as both a statement and a personal manifesto, emerging from the artist’s lived experience and dialogue with her community of Queer individuals and artists. This assertive affirmation raises questions around self-identification and the politics of representation, offering one response to what it means to create Queer art and who can be considered a Queer artist.

Rather than offering fixed answers, Brennan’s exploration of these questions leads her to embrace fluidity and expansion in her artistic practice. Her work resists definitive boundaries, embracing a multitude of interpretations that reflect the complexity and richness of Queer identity and creativity.

Curated by Siobhan Kelly, a recipient of the Belfast Exposed Futures Curator Award 2023, the exhibition is part of a programme designed to support emerging talent in the visual arts.
