“It’s a small act of care to mend a hole in your sock or the sock of someone you love. Mending builds on what is left behind – it doesn’t erase damage but makes the story more interesting.”
– Celia Pym
Socks: The Art of Care and Repair by London-based textile artist Celia Pym, is a heartwarming and hands-on celebration of mending, resilience, and sustainability.
At the centre of the exhibition is an installation of 488 darned socks, each carefully stitched by children, staff, and families from Surrey Square Primary School in Southwark, using discarded industry socks. These colourful, visible mends tell a story of care, creativity, and resourcefulness. Alongside them, Pym’s personal collection of repaired socks – belonging to friends and family – highlights the beauty of wear and the intimate act of preservation.
Visitors are invited to bring their own socks and take part in the art of darning, using materials available in the gallery. Step-by-step videos and workshops led by Celia Pym and other textile artists will provide guidance, turning simple repairs into meaningful acts of care.
