Join Ikon Gallery for a thought-provoking solo exhibition by British artist Mahtab Hussain.

“What Did You Want To See?” challenges perceptions of surveillance and community representation, focusing on Birmingham’s vibrant Muslim community.

Through photographic documentation, portraits, installations, and videos, Hussain examines the complex relationship between cultural identity, public space, and visual surveillance.

Hussain’s deeply personal approach offers a nuanced perspective on belonging, heritage, and resilience.

His work includes a striking grid of 160 Birmingham mosques, portraits capturing the diversity of the city’s residents, video exploring the Muslim experience in Britain, and an installation simulating a surveillance environment.
