How much of who we are comes from who they were?
In Who Were They? Who Am I?, artist Sabrina Tirvengadum embarks on a deeply personal journey into identity, ancestry, and hidden histories. Inspired by her father’s life and the untold stories of Indian indentured labour in Mauritius, this exhibition weaves together archival photographs, AI-generated imagery, digital art, and film to explore the complex ties between memory, lineage, and self-discovery.
Through works like If We Were Marrier d’Unienville, which examines her family’s connection to plantation owners who employed her great-grandmother as a maid, and the evocative short film A Souvenir to Keep, capturing daily moments from her first visit to Mauritius in 1993, Tirvengadum invites us to reflect on how history, family, and storytelling shape identity.
About the Artist
Sabrina Tirvengadum (she/her) is a British-Mauritian deaf multidisciplinary visual artist and designer. Her lived experience as a deaf woman with tinnitus informs her creative practice and advocacy. She is also the co-founder of We’re All Human (WAH), an initiative that challenges ableism in digital spaces and pushes for accessibility to be a priority in design.
