In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of HMT Empire Windrush’s historic arrival in Britain, “Windrush: Portraits of a Pioneering Generation” showcases ten portraits that illuminate the life experiences of individuals who have made significant and positive contributions to the United Kingdom.
These portraits pay tribute to a people who left their Caribbean homes to help rebuild post-war Britain. Facing adversity and discrimination, that assisted in the establishment of the NHS and filled vital roles such as construction, transportation, and healthcare.
The faces seen here serve as poignant symbols of personal resilience, unwavering determination, and the profound impact of this generation’s contribution to Britain.
Visit to see just a selection of these figureheads, and read our article “Celebrating Black British Artistry” to learn about the artists who joined the migration.
