More details on this book:
Willem de Kooning stood at the forefront of Abstract Expressionism. The 2011 MoMA showcase of his work attracted vast audiences, and his significant accomplishments continue to influence newer artists like Cecily Brown, Rebecca Warren, and Jonathan Lasker.
This book is the most comprehensive study on de Kooning. Richly illustrated, it covers his pivotal pieces, including the debated ‘Woman’ artworks, and a plethora of associated sketches and draft drawings.
The illustrated timeline highlights key moments in de Kooning’s life and career, interspersed with photos from his personal collection, enhancing the understanding of the broader art context. Judith Zilczer’s lauded study is vital for new readers and long-time fans, offering a thorough look at his artistic contributions.

The Author
Judith Zilczer, formerly of the Hirshhorn Museum, Smithsonian, curated numerous exhibits during her 29-year tenure. Notably, she was the museum’s Historian, Paintings Curator, and Acting Chief Curator. Some key exhibit publications she’s credited with are on Willem de Kooning (1993), Richard Lindner (1996), and Visual Music (2005). A University of Delaware Ph.D. alumna from 1975, she’s won awards like the 2006 George Wittenborn Memorial Book Award. Dr. Zilczer is a top authority on Willem de Kooning’s art.
“Books on artists tend to focus primarily either on their work or on their lives. Rarely does a publication come along that engages fully with both. Judith Zilczer’s beautifully written book makes clear the way in which de Kooning’s life cannot be separated from his work – his life and his art profoundly illuminate one another. If you truly want to appreciate the innovative accomplishments of de Kooning, this book is essential.” – Kerry Brougher, Interim Director and Chief Curator, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
