NO. 11012
Turner Contemporary, by Sir David Chipperfield, stands where JMW Turner’s frequented guesthouse was. This architectural marvel, formerly a car park, consists of six identical sections with roofs designed to maximise northern light. Elevated to prevent flood damage, its exterior is crafted for durability against sea corrosion, using acid-etched glass and concrete. The interior, marked by concrete floors and white walls, offers a minimalistic space for art appreciation. Exhibits are rotated, and the ground floor houses a café, shop, and event areas. The top floor’s controlled climate showcases artworks, illuminated by natural light.
