More details on this book:

Renoir was a founding member of the Impressionist movement and a friend of Monet, Pissarro, and Sisley. He painted alongside Monet on the banks of the Seine, sharing his love for light and colour but never losing his fascination for figure painting. Renoir delighted in capturing the generous curves of his nudes but also possessed a keen eye for depicting Parisian life.

In ‘Summertime’ (1879) and ‘The Dance at Bougival’ (1883), among other famous works, Renoir gives us an enduring record of contemporaries relaxing and enjoying their leisure.

The Author

British artist and art historian William Gaunt (1900-80) wrote many books and articles on nineteenth-century art.

Preface

Colin B. Bailey, an Impressionist painting specialist and the Director of the Morgan Library & Museum in New York City, is the author of numerous studies of Renoir and other French artists.

“It wasn’t until we saw these books in person that we were able to appreciate how sumptuous, smartly designed, and just plain sexy they are. Best of all are the illustrations. Each volume has 125 crisp and meticulous reproductions – the Van Gogh colours are ripe to the point of bursting.” — Elle Decor
