During his final days at the Saint-Rémy asylum in May 1890, Vincent van Gogh passionately captured the essence of spring through a quartet of vivid bouquets, including this painting, “Roses”, and it’s counterpart, “Irises“. These four bouquets were intended as a series, akin to his earlier Sunflower decoration in Arles. Whilst still impactful and calming, the faded traces of pink on the tabletop and rose petals in the present painting serve as a faint reminder of the once vibrant “canvas of pink roses against a yellow-green background in a green vase.”
